This reading should be required for anyone who wishes to advance in Management or to be looked upon as a leader. The lore of Rowan's heroics in Cuba is used as a backdrop to speak about how we as individuals in society should behave in the workforce, and generally as human beings. Those afflicted by laziness, prideful willfulness, stubbornness... they are all seen as disabling conditions, to be pitied as one would pity a person with a crippling physical infirmity. We are challenged to take responsibility, give each task our all, and do our very best to reach our highest potential. This was a very good read- take the time to read it. The reason I read this was because it is on the Commandant of the Marine Corps' reading list. I am planning on reading all those books and the books on the Secretary of the Army's reading list as well.
It's not well written, and not easy to follow so it looses a lot of points in that area. I think it would have been better if the story itself were told and not broken up by commentary throughout the book. It reads like an discombobulated and watered down epic poem. Tell the story, then comment on it. If you must break it up, do it in a chapter style format. Tell a chapter of the story then give commentary.
The message the book conveys is wonderful. A soldier does what they do when they are told the do it. They don't ask questions, they just do. It's also a good book on management. It says, as a leader, you should give a task to be done, and let the "subordinate" figure out how to get it done and let them do it on their own.
As a leadership development coach focused on working with incarcerated adults, I am constantly revisiting the world of leadership awareness and development. Elbert Hubbard's masterpiece should be required reading and analysis for every young leader striving to make a difference today. Stand tall and follow through!
Read many years ago and forgot about it until a recent dream in which I heard the word, "Garcia." When I could not locate the book in my library, I re-ordered it. There was no doubt in my mind I was given strong guidance re a project I have yet to complete.
When war broke out between Spain and the U.S. it was extremely necessary to communicate quickly with the insurgents. Garcia was somewhere in the mountains of Cuba, no one knew where. No mail or telegraph message could reach him. The President must secure his cooperation and quickly. What to do? Someone told the President "There is a fellow by the name of Rowan who will find Garcia if anyone can."
After re-reading my old book I realized the "message" in my dream. It was so obvious and painful to acknowledge because unlike, Lieutenant Rowan I'd been procrastinating for years regarding a project I promised to complete and finalize. Had I been given the 'message to Garcia' he would have never received it.
This book would be a wonderful gift to any young person starting out in life. It carries a powerful message. It got through to me; I actually started working on my project!
The book was published in 1899 and has been translated and re-translated throughout the world.
Written in the form of an exhortation, this brief yet powerful story should be required reading for every person coming of age in the USA. I will limit the suggested requirement to my country because I am not the proverbial citizen of the world. What makes a person and ultimately a society and culture great is personal responsibility. This is a magnificent rendition - part historical reference to a "real life" and "true" story, part a spirited call to action. Whether you know the story of Garcia or not ... this will be a treat to read. It will take just a short time to read, but will take hours to ponder, and a lifetime to fulfill the suggested requirement. Be responsible, be noble, be dependable, life a worthy life.
To be clear, this is not shallow coaching, and it is certainly not "self help" or therapeutic drabble. This is core stuff, told in an interesting mix of biopic and fireside chat style of a loved parent or colleague.
